Syracuse Biomaterials Institute seeks applications from undergraduates interested in research on biomaterials: synthetic and natural substances to treat disease or injury.

Possible Research Areas: Students have the opportunity to do research in any of the following areas: Understanding bacteria-material interactions by surface engineering; Functionalization of biomimetic interfaces via engineered proteins; Control of Natural Polymers for Drug Delivery; 2D and 3D Active Cell Culture; Neurite Outgrowth on Substrates with Modulus Gradients; Smart Drug Release: Furanone release from a shape memory hydrogel; Electrochemical Atomic Force Microscopy of Cell-Surface Interactions

Eligibility:
Undergraduate students majoring in the following disciplines: Engineering, Chemistry, Biology or Physics with an interest in Biomaterials Science. Most Students will have completed their junior year, although talented students with less experience will be considered for acceptance in the program. Benefits:
All participants will receive a stipend of $5000, as well as University housing at no additional expense.

ReNUWit REU at UC-Berkeley, Deadline to Apply: March 2, 2012

The Engineering Research Center (ERC) for Re-inventing the Nation's Urban Water Infrastructure (ReNUWIt) at the University of California at Berkeley has one undergraduate research position available for Summer 2012.
Potential projects include:
-Life cycle analysis of water infrastructure
-Urban stream restoration and biological assessment techniques
-Removal of chemical and microbial contaminants from stormwater using bio-infiltration basins
-Removal of micropollutants and pathogens from wastewater using unit process constructed wetlands

Langley Aerospace Research Student Scholars LARSS) Program, Deadline: May 25, 2012

The Langley Aerospace Research Student Scholars (LARSS) Program is a paid, unique, and highly competitive research internship program for undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).  For 25 years, the LARSS program has helped to preserve U.S. leadership in engineering and science by providing exceptional students the opportunity to work with Langley researchers on some of the Nation’s most important, difficult, and challenging problems that require multi-disciplinary and collaborative solutions.

The 15-week fall session begins September 4, 2012, and ends December 14, 2012, and the application deadline is May 25, 2012.

Female students and under-represented minorities, first-generation college students, and
students from economically-disadvantaged backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

-Full-time student status at an accredited U.S. college or university

Engineering Biological Machines (EBICS) REU, Deadline to Apply: February 15, 2012

Get involved in the "Engineering Biological Machines" REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) this summer! The REU has locations at MIT, Georgia Tech, and the University of Illinois. This 10-week program is full time, offers a generous stipend and travel allowance, as well as all food and housing expenses.

By combining scientific and engineering methods, students can conduct reserach in these areas:
-Stem cell differentiation
-Drug discovery and therapies
-Creating 3D cellular structures
-Engineered cell reactions

Cornell LSAMP Research Experience for Undergraduates; Deadline to Apply: March 1, 2012

The Cornell University Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP-R) is a summer research opportunity that provides undergraduate participants with the opportunity to work with distinguished faculty and staff as well as network with others in their field of interest through weekly luncheons.  This program will take place June 3 - August 8, 2012.

Undergraduate students, interested in gaining a deeper understanding in an engineering-related field, have the opportunity to conduct and present research over a ten-week duration under the auspices of a Cornell Engineering faculty research mentor. Through this one-on-one partnership, participants will gain theoretical knowledge and practical training in academic research and scientific experimentation. CU LSAMP-R was developed to aid in the retention of traditionally underrepresented minority groups in STEM.

CU LSAMP-R offers participants:
-Approximately 10 weeks of research (June 3- August 8)
-A research stipend of $3,400
-A round-trip travel stipend up to $300 for students living outside of Ithaca, NY
-A double room in a residential hall
-A campus bus pass or a campus parking pass
-Access to state-of-the-art laboratories, libraries, computer/study lounges, etc.

Further, CU LSAMP-R participants have the opportunity to:
-Develop a meaningful research agenda and conduct research with a faculty research mentor
-Present a scientific research talk
-Design a research poster and discuss their poster presentation of their research at a symposium on campus and
-Submit a written report at the end of the summer research activity that may lead to a publication

The SU LSAMP research program was developed to aid in the retention of traditionally underrepresented groups in the sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site

INTERDISCIPLINARY WATER SCIENCES AND ENGINEERING

Applications are invited from qualified and motivated undergraduate students (rising sophomores, juniors and seniors) from all U.S. colleges/universities to participate in a 10-week (June 03-August 10, 2012) summer research in interdisciplinary water sciences and engineering at Virginia Tech. U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents are eligible to apply. The research program is funded through the National Science Foundation – Research Experiences for Undergraduates (NSF REU) program. The 10-week internship will begin on June 03, 2012 (arrival day) at Virginia Tech and end on August 10, 2012 (departure day: Aug. 10 or 11). The research internship includes a stipend of $450/week, subsistence costs (dormitory and most of the meals) and round trip travel expenses, limited to a maximum of $500 per person, to Virginia Tech.   We have already graduated 36 excellent undergraduate researchers from our site during 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2011. The Cornell Center for Materials Research (CCMR) is now accepting applications for its 2012 summer REU Program. This 10-week internship program gives students the opportunity to work with Cornell faculty on interdisciplinary materials research projects involving chemistry, physics, mathematics, materials science and engineering disciplines. Students will also participate in an organized program of lectures, mini-courses, laboratory visits and a variety of recreational activities. Each student will receive a $4000 stipend and reimbursement of travel expenses up to $400. On-campus housing is provided, however meals are not. The program is open to Fall 2012 undergraduates who are US Citizens or permanent residents.

Bioprocess Engineering for Sustainability REU at Virginia Tech, Deadline: March 22, 2012

Bioprocess Engineering for Sustainability - 2012 Research Experience for Undergraduates

This National Science Foundation (NSF) sponsored Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) gives undergraduate engineering students the opportunity to perform research and participate in educational programs in bioprocess engineering (BPE) and enjoy team-building and social activities in Blacksburg, VA.  Research areas include synthetic biology and metabolic/genetic engineering for biofuel and biochemical production, protein engineering for biopharmaceuticals, and sustainable biomaterials.  Participants will attend the 2012 American Chemical Society Green Chemistry and Engineering Conference in Washington DC from June 18-20.

Stipend: $4,000/summer, plus room and board.

Applicants should be rising sophomores, juniors, or seniors in any engineering discipline with an interest in bioprocess engineering.  Underrepresented minorities and women are particularly encouraged to apply.

National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network REU, Deadline: February 8, 2012

The National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network (NNIN) REU is a large and highly successful summer program conducted across fourteen participating sites, some of the leading nanotechnology university laboratories in the United States.  NNIN is in their 16th year of this REU program, and over hte years, have had over 900 participants.  NNIN consistently receives high marks from student interns for providing a quality research experience.  Similarly, the faculty consistently rate the performance of the students very highly.  Participants undertake a challenging nanotechnology project, working with NNIN faculty and staff, and using the advanced equipment and process resources of NNIN.

NNIN is most suitable for students who have completed their sophomore or junior year in science or engineering, and who are interested in a science or engineering career.  Applications from women and minority students, as well as those from smaller non-research institutions, and students with limited research experience, are encouraged.

Texas A&M University Undergraduate Summer Research Grant, Deadline: February 8, 2012

The Dwight Look College of Engineering at Texas A&M University invites students to apply for the 2012 Undergraduate Summer Research Grant (USRG) program. This program is funded by the college and modeled after the NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU). USRG and REU students from engineering and across the university interact at various social and academic events. The program description and application can be found at http://essap.tamu.edu/usrg.

The application deadline is Wednesday, February 8, 2012.

During this summer research experience, participants work closely with faculty members on current or individual research projects, attend development and GRE workshops, make a formal poster presentation of their research experience, and submit a final written report describing the results of their research.

To participate in the program, students should have:
1. Interest in and a desire to actively participate in ongoing or individual research projects

2. Minimum 3.25 cumulative GPA

3. Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident

4. Major in engineering or related science or math curriculum

5. Completed sophomore year (at least 60 hours) by the end of Spring 2012

6. Plan to graduate no sooner than December 2012

Funding:
Each participant will receive a $5,000 scholarship for support during the ten weeks. The program will also pay tuition and fees for one credit hour of a required independent study/research; provide housing (or housing allowance); and pay up to $400 for travel expenses for non-TAMU participants.

Amgen Scholars Summer Research Program in Science and Biotechnology, Deadline: February 1, 2012

This UC Berkeley national program provides participants with the opportunity to conduct research with a faculty member, communicate their science in poster and oral presentations, receive a stipend, housing, meal plan, and transportation to and from the UC Berkeley campus.

MURF Program, Deadline: January 11, 2012

The MURF program aims to increase the participation of underrepresented students (such as African American, Hispanic, and Native American, females who are underrepresented in their discipline, or first-generation college students) in science and engineering Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. programs and to make Caltech's programs more visible to students not traditionally exposed to Caltech.

Eligibility: Students must be current sophomores through non-graduating seniors and must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents. A minimum GPA of 3.2 is required.

Competitive applicants will have completed sophomore-level courses in desired research field, have demonstrated through academic and/or co-curricular activities a passion for research, and can articulate how their research interests align with Caltech's research areas.

Support: MURF students will receive a $6000 award for the ten-week program. An additional $500 housing and travel supplement will be provided.

CRA-W/CDC Distributed Research Experiences for Undergraduates, Deadline: February 15, 2012

The CRA-W/CDC Distributed Research Experiences for Undergraduates (DREU) Program matches promising undergraduates with a faculty mentor for a summer research experience at the faculty member's home institution. The objective of the DREU is to increase the number of women and students from underrepresented groups, including ethnic minorities and persons with disabilities, entering graduate studies in the fields of computer science and engineering.

Funding for the student consists of $6000 for the summer (10 weeks),plus relocation travel assistance when appropriate. Additional funds may be available to support student conference travel, either during the summer or afterward, and for outreach activities promoting the DREU.

SUPERB-ITS REU at UC-Berkeley, Deadline: January 31, 2012

The University of California-Berkeley is accepting applications for its Summer Undergraduate Program in Engineering Research at Berkeley in Computer Science-Information Technology for Sustainability (SUPERB-ITS) for summer 2012.

This program includes:
  • A 9-week research experience from June 4 - August 3, 2012

National Undergraduate Fellowship in Plasma Physics and Fusion Energy Sciences, Deadline: February 15, 2012

The National Undergraduate Fellowship Program in Plasma Physics and Fusion Energy Sciences provides outstanding undergraduates with an opportunity to conduct research at laboratories around the country.  Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Fusion of Energy Sciences, the 9-week summer fellowship is preceded by a 1-week introductory course at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory.  During the fall semester following the internship, students attend the American Physical Society's Division of Plasma Physics annual conference to present their work.

The program is intended for students that have completed their Junior year, majoring in Physics or another related field.  Highly motivated Sophomores are alos eligible to apply.  Students should have taken at leat 1 course in electricity and magnetism beyond introductory physics.  Eligible students must be currently enrolled at a U.S. college or university and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien.  Housing, travel costs, and a stipend of $4,800 are provided.

Applications for the 2012 program (which runs from June 12, 2012 to August 18, 2012) will be accepted until February 15, 2012.

REU at the Center for Energy Efficient Electronics Science (UC-Berkeley), Deadline: February 1, 2012

The Center for Energy Efficient Electronics Science (E3S) at the University of California, Berkeley will host its annual Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) from June 11 – August 12, 2012. This program is open to current sophomores, juniors and non-graduating seniors, majoring in Physical Sciences and Engineering and with a minimum GPA of 3.25. In particular, applicants from under-represented minority communities are encouraged to apply.

Our REU program introduces energy efficient electronics science to undergraduates who are motivated by science and engineering. We have research programs in nanoelectronics, nanomechanics, nanophotonics and nanomagnetics. Summer researchers have the opportunity to join E3S researchers who are working in a collaborative and innovative environment to make fundamental breakthroughs in the underlying physics, chemistry, and material science of electronics systems.

The program offers each participant nine weeks of research experience in the laboratory of an E3S faculty member at Berkeley that will include a research paper and a poster presentation of the research outcomes. In addition to participating in cutting edge electrical engineering and physics research projects, the program also offers educational activities including seminars, laboratory tours and field trips, as well as one-on-one advice regarding graduate school programs, the process to apply for fellowship, and a GRE prep course.

Smart Lighting Engineering Research Center REU, Deadline: February 29, 2012

The SMART LIGHTING ENGINEERING RESEARCH CENTER (ERC) is an integrated research, education, and technology transfer center funded by the National Science Foundation and NYSTAR. The Center is developing technologies to revolutionize lighting that provides unparalleled benefits in energy conservation, human health and safety, and high speed information and access. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY is the lead institution for the Smart Lighting ERC, partnering with Boston University and the University of New Mexico.

Each summer the ERC supports a 10-week research program for visiting undergraduate researchers who are valued members of one of multiple research groups within the Smart Lighting ERC. Participants attend all research group meetings for an understanding of how their project fits into the goals of the research group and the Center. Participants also attend weekly seminars, field trips, and lab tours with a community of undergraduate summer research scholars who are participating in other summer REU programs at Rensselaer. Midway through the program, each participant presents a 10-minute oral progress report and submits a written progress report. During the last week of the program, participants will present at a REU Symposium and prepare a final written report based on his/her summer research accomplishments. Participants have full use of Institute, departmental, and group facilities, including libraries, computer facilities, technical shops, recreational and sports facilities, and more.
