Recent earthquakes in the US and around the world have repeatedly shown that earthquake resilience is essential to building and sustaining urban communities. Earthquake resilience will play an increasingly important role in the professions associated with earthquake hazard mitigation, and the ten-week 2012 PEER Summer Internship Program will allow you to experience how many different engineering and social science disciplines interact to research the broad goal of earthquake resilient communities.
During the summer of 2012, interns will be hosted at UC Berkeley, UC Davis and University of Washington to conduct research projects in the fields of structural engineering, geotechnical engineering and risk analysis.
Each participant will receive a stipend of $7,000, intended to cover summer housing and travel expenses to the summer project location. PEER will provide additional compensation for travel to an Orientation Workshop at UC Berkeley and to the 2012 PEER Annual Meeting.
The first application deadline is Tuesday February 21, 2012 at 8:00 am Pacific Time. Application review will begin on February 21 and continue on a rolling basis until all internships are awarded. Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply before the February 21st deadline.

Get involved in the "Engineering Biological Machines" REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) this summer! The REU has locations at MIT, Georgia Tech, and the University of Illinois. The Scholarship Program offers an opportunity for students to get $1500 for their college expenses, but more than that, we strive to give students an opportunity to exercise leadership skills, learn relationship building and teamwork, by working with us at Fiesta del Sol. Fiesta del Sol has given over $700,000 in scholarships to 450 students.
Eligibility:
-Be of Latino/Hispanic descent, and live on the Southwest side of Chicago, between 16th to 79th streets, and between Cicero Ave., (4800 West) and Canal (500 West), OR Be a volunteer at PNCC;

National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network REU, Deadline: February 8, 2012
The National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network (NNIN) REU is a large and highly successful summer program conducted across fourteen participating sites, some of the leading nanotechnology university laboratories in the United States. NNIN is in their 16th year of this REU program, and over hte years, have had over 900 participants. NNIN consistently receives high marks from student interns for providing a quality research experience. Similarly, the faculty consistently rate the performance of the students very highly. Participants undertake a challenging nanotechnology project, working with NNIN faculty and staff, and using the advanced equipment and process resources of NNIN.
NNIN is most suitable for students who have completed their sophomore or junior year in science or engineering, and who are interested in a science or engineering career. Applications from women and minority students, as well as those from smaller non-research institutions, and students with limited research experience, are encouraged.

The Dwight Look College of Engineering at Texas A&M University invites students to apply for the 2012 Undergraduate Summer Research Grant (USRG) program. This program is funded by the college and modeled after the NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU). The Fluid Power Scholars Program is a collaborative effort between the Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power (CCEFP) and companies in the fluid power industry who are corporate members of the CCEFP. This highly selective summer program identifies and connects the very best undergraduate engineering students across the United States to the fluid power industry with the purpose of training the next-generation of fluid power leaders.
This is a highly competitive program, open to undergraduates who have successfully completed at least two years in an accredited engineering program in the United States. The Scholars program begins with an intensive three and 1/2 day instructional program in fluid power, taught at the Fluid Power Institute at the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE), and follows with internships in the fluid power industry. The Fluid Power "Bootcamp" at MSOE will be held May 21-24, 2012. Students should expect to spend 10-11 weeks as a intern in their host company. Up to ten undergraduate students will be selected as Fluid Power Scholars by a committee of faculty and industry representatives. National Undergraduate Fellowship in Plasma Physics and Fusion Energy Sciences, Deadline: February 15, 2012
The National Undergraduate Fellowship Program in Plasma Physics and Fusion Energy Sciences provides outstanding undergraduates with an opportunity to conduct research at laboratories around the country. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Fusion of Energy Sciences, the 9-week summer fellowship is preceded by a 1-week introductory course at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory. During the fall semester following the internship, students attend the American Physical Society's Division of Plasma Physics annual conference to present their work.
The program is intended for students that have completed their Junior year, majoring in Physics or another related field. Highly motivated Sophomores are alos eligible to apply. Students should have taken at leat 1 course in electricity and magnetism beyond introductory physics. Smart Lighting Engineering Research Center REU, Deadline: February 29, 2012
The SMART LIGHTING ENGINEERING RESEARCH CENTER (ERC) is an integrated research, education, and technology transfer center funded by the National Science Foundation and NYSTAR. The Center is developing technologies to revolutionize lighting that provides unparalleled benefits in energy conservation, human health and safety, and high speed information and access. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY is the lead institution for the Smart Lighting ERC, partnering with Boston University and the University of New Mexico.
Each summer the ERC supports a 10-week research program for visiting undergraduate researchers who are valued members of one of multiple research groups within the Smart Lighting ERC. Participants attend all research group meetings for an understanding of how their project fits into the goals of the research group and the Center. Participants also attend weekly seminars, field trips, and lab tours with a community of undergraduate summer research scholars who are participating in other summer REU programs at Rensselaer. Midway through the program, each participant presents a 10-minute oral progress report and submits a written progress report. During the last week of the program, participants will present at a REU Symposium and prepare a final written report based on his/her summer research accomplishments. Participants have full use of Institute, departmental, and group facilities, including libraries, computer facilities, technical shops, recreational and sports facilities, and more.

Each summer the ERC supports a 10-week research program for visiting undergraduate researchers who are valued members of one of multiple research groups within the Smart Lighting ERC. Participants attend all research group meetings for an understanding of how their project fits into the goals of the research group and the Center. Participants also attend weekly seminars, field trips, and lab tours with a community of undergraduate summer research scholars who are participating in other summer REU programs at Rensselaer. Midway through the program, each participant presents a 10-minute oral progress report and submits a written progress report. During the last week of the program, participants will present at a REU Symposium and prepare a final written report based on his/her summer research accomplishments. Participants have full use of Institute, departmental, and group facilities, including libraries, computer facilities, technical shops, recreational and sports facilities, and more.

HARP REU at the University of Hawaii-Manoa, Deadline: February 15, 2012
HARP is a summer research experience for undergraduates sponsored by NSF at University of Hawaii, Mānoa. The program offers competitive benefits and the opportunity to work on exciting and relevant projects with world-class experts.
Engineering or Science undergraduates with a minimum 3.0 GPA and a strong interest in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and High Performance Computing (HPC) should apply. All work will be done from the campus at Honolulu, HI. The students will receive a generous stipend, and travel to and from Hawai‘i will be provided.

Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates at Northwestern University, Deadline: February 15, 2012
The Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) at Northwestern University offers a 9-week, paid summer research experience for undergraduates. The students are paired up with some of the leading research professors in science and engineering fields. Research areas include ceramics, nanocomposites, photonics, nanoparticles, and molecular electronics. While there are many REU programs, the NU-MRSEC stands out in offering students an interdisciplinary research experience. Students currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in science or engineering who are US citizens or permanent residents are eligible. The program dates this year are June 18 to August 17, 2012.

Caltech MURF Fellowships and AMGEN Scholars Program, Deadline, January-February 2012
MURF UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS
The MURF program aims to increase the participation of underrepresented students (such as African American, Hispanic, and Native American, females who are underrepresented in their discipline, or first-generation college students) in science and engineering Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. programs and to make Caltech's programs more visible to students not traditionally exposed to Caltech.
Eligibility: Students must be current sophomores through non-graduating seniors and must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents. A minimum GPA of 3.2 is required.
Competitive applicants will have completed sophomore-level courses in desired research field, have demonstrated through academic and/or co-curricular activities a passion for research, and can articulate how their research interests align with Caltech's research areas.
Support: MURF students will receive a $6000 award for the ten-week program. An additional $500 housing and travel supplement will be provided.

AMGEN SCHOLARS PROGRAM
Caltech's Amgen Scholars Program is geared towards students in biology, chemistry, and biotechnology fields. Some of these fields include biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, chemical and biomolecular engineering, and chemistry.
Eligibility: Students must be current sophomores through non-graduating seniors, must be attending a four-year university, and must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents. A minimum GPA of 3.2 is required.
Support: Amgen Scholars will receive a $5500 award, round-trip air transportation, a generous housing allowance, and a food allowance.

Human Computer Interaction REU, Deadline: February 15, 2012
The Human Computer Interaction Graduate Program at Iowa State University hosts a summer Undergraduate Research Experience, sponsored by the National Science Foundation. This is a ten week internship where students take short courses in HCI and work in interdisciplinary teams on research projects. Housing and meals are provided, as well as a $5000 stipend. Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation, Deadline: February 13, 2012
The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation awards merit-based scholarships to college students who plan to pursue careers in government or elsewhere in public service. Truman Scholars receive up to $30,000 for graduate or professional school, participate in leadership development activities, and have special opportunities for internships and employment with the federal government.
Each nominee for the Truman Scholarship must be:
-a full-time junior-level student at a four-year institution pursuing a bachelor's degree during the 2011-2012 academic year. 'Junior' here means a student who plans to continue full-time undergraduate study and who expects to receive a baccalaureate degree between December 2012 and August 2012, or a student in his or her third year of collegiate study who expects to graduate during the 2011-2012 academic year, *or a senior-level student who is a resident of Puerto Rico* or the Islands as defined below;
