The Writers Workshop is offering brief personal statement workshops in room 251 Undergraduate Library for students (primarily undergraduates) who are writing personal statements or any other type of application essay. Students should call 333-8796 to reserve a spot for one of these times:

Interactive sessions begin with a brief presentation introducing the concept of personal statements and are followed by a discussion of some strategies and pitfalls, review of sample statements, and time for questions and answers with a skilled consultant. Students will also have an opportunity to get individual feedback on their own personal statements if time allows.

Teleconference - "The Importance of Networking" by Dr. Yolanda Rankin
The Empowering Leadership Alliance hosted its 2nd mentoring teleconference: What is life as a graduate student? Dr. Dilma da Silva, researcher at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center, served as the dynamic telementor/facilitator. There were over 20 registrants for this session yesterday. Thanks, Dr. da Silva for a job well-done!

Yolanda A. Rankin, Ph.D., is a Research Scientist at IBM Research – Almaden in California. Her primary research interests involve conceptual design and evaluation of digital media as collaborative technology that promotes knowledge acquisition and situational awareness. Yolanda has more than 8 years industry experience in software engineering and project management of mobile features and optical sub systems. Yolanda completed her Ph.D. in Computer Science at Northwestern University, a M.A. in Computer Science at Kent State University, and a B.S. in Mathematics at Tougaloo College.

THE FELLOWSHIPS are for up to two years of graduate study in ANY FIELD at any university in the United States. They provide cash support of $25,000 per year plus up to $20,000 in tuition support per year (a total of as much as $90,000 over the two years!). THE DEADLINE for applications is November 1, 2010.
ELIGIBILITY: New Americans: if born abroad, an applicant must have a green card or be a naturalized citizen. if born in the US, the applicant's parents both must have been born abroad and have become naturalized US citizens (the absent parent of an applicant raised by a single parent need not meet the naturalization requirement). Age: An applicant must be 30 or under (i.e. not 31 or older) as of November 1, 2010.
Academic status: An applicant must have a bachelor's degree or at least be in his/her final year of undergraduate study. If already in graduate study, an applicant should be in the first or second year of a degree program for which she/he is seeking support. Prior graduate training is not a barrier to eligibility. Individuals who are not currently in a graduate program are welcome and encouraged to apply.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund & Marathon Oil Corporation Scholarships. Deadline: November 1, 2010.
Scholarships available for African-American, Asian Pacific Islander and American Indian/Native American students.
Several scholarship opportunities are available through the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, and one through HSF and the Marathon Oil Corporation.
The HSF awards more than 4,000 scholarships to college students each year, with 12 different scholarship programs currently open to undergraduates and four for graduate students.

Vanguard Women in Information Technology Scholarship
The Vanguard Women in Information Technology Scholarship Program provides merit-based scholarships of up to $10,000 to female students entering their junior or senior year of college during the 2011-12 school year. Applicants must be pursuing studies in computer science, computer engineering, Web design or other IT-related disciplines.
