Trials Residential Scholarship Program, Deadline: February 15, 2010

Trials is a residential scholarship program that helps talented and motivated undergraduates of modest means earn acceptance to the nation's leading law schools. Trials is a unique collaboration of New York University School of Law, Harvard Law School, and the Advantage Testing Foundation.

For five weeks this July and early August, Trials students will reside at the NYU School of Law to receive intensive LSAT instruction and attend a series of lectures by prominent lawyers and scholars. Students have no expenses associated with the program and will receive a stipend to supplement their summer income.

Trials welcomes applications from aspiring students of any background whose personal circumstances, self-identifications, and unique perspectives might place them outside the mainstream of typical law school applicants.

Students who participated in last year's Trials program at Harvard Law School worked with leading faculty from Harvard and NYU's law schools and received a wide-ranging introduction to the law in small lectures and mock classes. The scholars and lawyers who visited Trials helped students develop a concrete set of goals and a realistic plan for achieving them.

The data from Trial's inaugural class suggests that five weeks of logical reasoning, argumentation, and critical reading instruction prepare dour students to score competitively on the LSAT. The starting median LSAT score for the 2009 class was in the 53rd percentile. More than half of Trials graduates who have thus far taken an official LSAT have recorded a score at or above the 95th percentile.

Trials seeks to promote diversity at America’s leading law schools and in the legal profession. Our explicit aim is to support students of modest means whose racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds are underrepresented in America’s top-rated JD programs. We welcome applications from all motivated students of any background whose personal circumstances, self-identifications, and unique perspectives might place them outside the mainstream of typical law school applicants.

How to Apply:
We will give particular consideration to those candidates who attend colleges that traditionally send no more than one graduate per year to the partnering law schools. Each summer, the majority of students enrolled in Trials will hail from such underrepresented institutions.

At this time, only U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible to enroll in the Trials program.

We take into account all aspects of a candidate’s application, and we encourage all eligible students who are interested in attending law school to apply to Trials.

Please visit this website to apply.

Fermilab Summer Internships in Science and Technology, Deadline: February 19, 2010

The Summer Internships in Science and Technology (SIST) program focuses on giving opportunities in science and technology to undergraduate college students currently enrolled in four-year colleges and universities in the United States. Internships are offered to students majoring in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science. These internships offer a chance for approximately fifteen college students to work with Fermilab scientists or engineers on a project within the context of laboratory research.

The SIST program provides the opportunity to work with scientists and engineers at the nation's pre-eminent high energy physics laboratory. There is no "busy work" here -- here is your chance to dig in to an exciting project and make real contributions towards furthering our understanding of the universe!

The twelve-week program consists of a work assignment, an academic lecture series, and a final report that the intern presents orally to the Fermilab staff and submits to the Laboratory in writing. (Check out the presentations and papers from 2009, 2008 and 2007.) There are no grades or quizzes. The SIST Committee will follow the intern's progress to help ensure his/her maximum benefit from the program.

This 12 week program offers competitive pay, furnished apartments, rental cars, and more which is detailed in the Fact Sheet. This year the program runs from May 19th through August 6th.

The SIST program is open to undergraduates currently enrolled in four-year colleges and universities in the United States.

Internships are offered to students majoring in Physics, Electrical/Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science. The program can accept only U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and foreign nationals holding pre- or post-graduation OPT.

To apply to the program download and complete the application form and upload the data to the SIST server (complete instructions are included in the form). Please download the application here.

You will also need to arrange to have two letters of recommendation and an official transcript submitted before your application is considered to be complete.

Top applicants will be contacted for a phone or videoconference interview the first week of March and our finalists will be notified on Friday March 5th 2010.

University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Short Tearm Research Opportunities for Undergraduate Students

Application Deadline: Wednesday, March 3, 2010
Notification of Acceptance: Mid-March, 2010
Appointment Start Date: Late May-Early June, 2010

Applications are now being accepted for the 2010 “Cancer Prevention Education: Student Research Experiences” at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. M. D. Anderson is one of the nation's leading cancer research and treatment centers. As a result of a two-year American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) stimulus award, new opportunities are available for interested and qualified upper level undergraduate students to participate in a research experience in cancer prevention. A total of eight students will be selected to participate in the 12-week program. While most students will participate during the summer, opportunities for these research experiences may be available at other times during the year.

The “Cancer Prevention Education: Student Research Experiences” program is designed to encourage undergraduate students to pursue research careers by exposing them to mentored hands-on research experiences early in their academic career. Students will work in a research environment with extensive epidemiologic, laboratory and clinical facilities under the supervision of an established investigator on the faculty of M. D. Anderson, as well as attend seminars and lectures. Students are immersed in the type of cross-disciplinary research environment typical of cancer prevention and control research, with opportunities for studying epidemiology (including molecular and genetic epidemiology), behavioral science, clinical cancer prevention, health disparities and other prevention-related disciplines. Based on their interests, successful applicants will be paired with an appropriate faculty mentor for the duration of the research experience. Students will be expected to devote full-time effort to this research experience.

Eligibility

Students must have either (a) completed their sophomore or junior year and be enrolled in an undergraduate degree program classified as a junior or senior by September 2010, or (b) completed their undergraduate degree and be accepted to start a graduate program by September 2010. Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Applicants with visas are not eligible. Students who are members of groups historically underrepresented in the sciences (African-American, Hispanic, American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander) as well as those who are the first in their family of origin to attend college are especially encouraged to apply. The Advisory Committee selects students based on the applicant’s record of scholastic achievement, aptitude for science and interest in cancer prevention.

Remuneration
Participants in the program receive a stipend of up to $2,166 per month for the three-month period. The stipend is not a salary; it is meant solely to subsidize students so that they may participate in the program.

Application Process
The completed application — consisting of an application form, résumé or curriculum vitae, a brief statement of intent, a letter of recommendation from a professor or academic advisor and a copy of transcript with grades— must be submitted by March 3, 2010. Applications received after this deadline will not be considered. Selection of participants will be announced in mid-March 2010 by members of the Advisory Committee of the Cancer Prevention Research Training Program.

Before confirmation of acceptance into the program, selected applicants will be required to submit additional documents, including official transcripts, a letter of good standing or of matriculation from the applicant’s school, a completed immunization record (an official M. D. Anderson form will be provided) and a TB skin test.
